The 2008 Paralympics started this weekend and more than 4,200 athletes from 148 countries are in China, making this the largest ever number of nations at the Paralympics.

I have been browsing the official website for the games and I am really impressed by it's quality. All of the answers one could want are there, Athlete Bios, Medal Counts by country, a World Records page, everything is right there and very easy to find.

160 athletic gold medals will be won in twenty different sports and on the first day of the competion more than 50 world and paralympic records were equalled or beaten outright. In swimming alone 13 world records were smashed and 16 gold's were awarded. The U.S. won 4 of them, tying with Great Britain in gold medals and are third in the overall medal count.

Coverage of the games can be watched worldwide by streaming media on the internet here. These pix are from the opening ceremonies and I'll post more tommorow. Photo Credit:Xinhua
