"KUALA LUMPUR: Fraidden Dawan stole the limelight on the first day of swimming competition in the 5th Asean Paralympics Games at the National Aquatics Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday. He smashed the men’s 400m freestyle Asean record by more than 18 seconds.

The 23-year-old Sarawakian, who lost his left leg in a jungle accident in 2000, clocked 5:07.78 to finish ahead of Thailand’s Hadee Paiwan, who holds the previous record of 5:26.52, which was set in Korat in 2007. Hadee touched home in 5:16.90 while Eric Villa­nue­va of the Philippines finished in 5:54.68 for the bronze.
